Leadership

As you can see from above, one of the three main themes of this year's conference is "Leadership." What does it mean to be a leader? How do we develop leadership? How is it a personal experience and how is it more of a communal experience? What questions or thoughts do you have about leadership?

To be a leader means having influential power that one ought to apply to the self, family (natural or chosen) and community. There are many definitions for leadership; however I believe that to be a leader one has to make the decision to see that everything around you goes well. Developing leadership is not an easy undertaking. With that said, leadership is developed through lots of cultivating and preparation. It is personal because one must learn to reflect on past experiences and it is communal because one must take those past experiences and learn how to engage, organize, and apply the experiences in a strategic manner. I often tell the students I work with that although my education is under my name and I worked very hard to achieve it, my education belongs to them. What would be the point of filling a glass with water and then have no one drink from it? My thoughts on leadership… it is an ever evolving process and the potential is always there, for everyone.
